In 1921, the National Association of Secondary School Principals passed the resolution to form the National Honor Society. Before 1921, there was no national organization to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate the desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage students to develop character. Today there are over 20,000 chapters nationwide.

Membership:

Students will be eligible for membership into CLHS’s National Honor Society in the spring of their sophomore year.  In the spring, students will be invited to apply for membership IF their overall GPA is a 4.0, and they have spent at least one semester at Clear Lake High School.

Since the four basic tenets of NHS are scholarship, leadership, service and character, potential members will then complete an application for membership.  To be eligible for membership, applicants must prove:

  • Scholarship – at least a 4.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Positive character – positive student-teacher relationships, minimal IF any office referrals, no ISS, no suspensions, and an E or S in conduct.
  • Leadership -- participation in various clubs, sports, and organizations in the school and/or community.
  • Service – active involvement in a service organization or volunteering in the community for at least twenty cumulative hours from the summer prior to their freshmen year to the present date.

To learn more about these four qualities, continue to the Membership Page.

A minimum of two diverse activities (at least one must be service oriented) should be documented on the application.  At least one activity MUST be affiliated with Clear Lake High School.  Applications without documentation or proof of membership/service will not be accepted.

If applicants meet all of the above standards and pay their membership fees in a timely manner, then they will be inducted into the National Honor Society in the spring induction ceremony.  Students may also apply for membership again in the spring of their junior year.

Membership in National Honor Society is a privilege, and members are held to high standards.  Members may be dismissed or put on probation if they do not meet these standards each semester.  Members are also expected to attend meetings once a month and participate in various service projects throughout the year.  If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact Lindy La Coume, NHS Sponsor, through the school switchboard or via email at llacoume@ccisd.net.
